Music has always been at the core of my life. I picked up violin at the age of 4, immediately feeling a strong connection to the instrument and the emotions I felt when playing it. When practicing scales became tedious, I would create little melodies which sparked my interest in composition.
GCSE music allowed me to further explore composition while searching for musical inspiration. Rewatching films like Pirates of the Caribbean, How To Train Your Dragon and the Studio Ghibli Suite, led me to discover that the emotional impact stems from the music. Inspired by their soundtracks, I wrote my final GCSE composition 'Battle of the Eclipse' in a cinematic style. Aged 15, my life goal became to influence an audience.
Keen to pursue music, especially composition, I evaluated my knowledge and lack thereof - identifying technology as my biggest limitation. After studying music production at college, I had gained an understanding of studios, live sound and the industry as well as proficiency in multiple DAWs. With my rescores as earlier college projects and 'Echoes of the Earth' as my last, I had the beginnings of a portfolio.
I was accepted into Guildhall School of Music and Drama for a BMus in film music, which is where I am currently refining my musical voice. Over time, my adoration and knowledge of composition and film music has only grown. My wish to create an emotional impact continues to be my drive.
Guildhall presented the incredible opportunity to be mentored by award winning film composer Rachel Portman! After narrowly missing this project last year, my pitch won me a masterclass with Rachel as well as a recording session with guidance from her.
During the masterclass, my piece received no negative feedback and Rachel said it was 'beautiful'.
This is the final product of a project with Central StMartins (UAL). The prompt was a list of paired contrasting emotions with the aim to create a 45s piece which moves from emotion 1 to emotion 2. My chosen pair was Anxious-Confident. This piece served as the starting point for a short animation.
I was able to have this piece recorded by the Guildhall Session Orchestra to which I added guitar and percussion.
This Project was a collaboration between the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and The National Gallery! We chose, from a select list of paintings, our inspiration for a string quartet composition. The painting which most spoke to me was 'Witches at Their Incantations' by Salvator Rosa.
For this dark and occult-inspired painting, I thought of two possible approaches. Firstly, was the idea that I could write something as chilling and disturbing as the painting itself, or alternatively, I could draw upon the perspective of the witches and convey the unsettling yet righteously convicted nature of their evils. I wanted to create something grotesquely playful, yet still knowingly callous.
This was the first string quartet I have ever written and was performed in The National Gallery on the 28th February 2025.
Echoes of the Earth is my debut EP as an orchestral composer - released in May 2024. Inspired by my love of nature and awe of natural landscapes, I composed 3 tracks.
The first - At Mountain's Foot - embodies my admiration of the big, epic, cinematic style scores that appear in more modern action and fantasy media. This genre of music is what drew me into film composition.
River's Path takes on a more emotional tone, while still including elements of my favoured epic writing style. It was an early exploration of motif-based writing (composing around a set musical phrase). I introduce the motif in the first few bars before using the rest of the piece to develop, fragment and adapt it.
Finally, I composed At Cliff's Edge as a narrative piece to portray the thoughts and feelings one may face while at the edge of a cliff. These are shown through 3 unique sections. One of my favourite albums, Forgotten Odes by Eternal Eclipse was a strong inspiration for this piece.
